The Chevrolet Chevelle was a mid-sized car from Chevrolet introduced in 1964. Chevelle’s were produced from 1964 to 1977 and was a very successful line for GM.

The Chevelle models ranged from the family cars to the more powerful coupes and convertibles.

Chevrolet plan to compete with the Ford Fairlane line with the Chevelle. The main idea was to bring back the car concept to the popular 55 through 57 model lines.

Chevelle came in a four-door hardtop, called a Sport Sedan and were available from 1966 through 1972.

The two-door station was available in 1964 and 1965 in the 300 series a bottom of the line version.

The station wagons were sold with what was billed as exclusive nameplates: Nomad, Nomad Custom, Greenbrier, Concours, and Concours Estate.

Chevrolet’s entry into the muscle car market began with the Chevelle SS. Beginning in 64 and 65 the Chevelles got a Malibu Badge on the rear quarter panel.

This is the most sought after Badge today on the models and real cars. The famous Z16 option Malibu SS396 of which there were only 201 produced. The Malibu SS badge went away after 65 and some were still sold in Canada.

Beginning in 66 the Chevelle SS396 a very high performance with its own line of high power engines and performance equipment in power ranges from 325 all the way to 375 hp.

These Chevelle’s make a great addition to vintage model car collections because some of them are very rare.

Very unique for the day was the new 1958 Impala’s six tail lights that really set it apart from the other models. The new Impala’s styling set a standard and trademark for Chevrolet.

In 1959 the Impala became a truly separate model with both 2 door and 4 door versions. The Impala starting in 1960 turned out to be the best-selling car in the good old USA.

The Impala held this title for the next ten years. The name for the 1958 Chevy first appeared on a show car used in 1956. It was a 1956 Corvette presented at the General Motors Motorama.

The Corvette sported an emerald green metallic paint, had white interior with a hardtop and called an Impala.

The Impala got its start back in 1958 and is still made to this very day. The Impala has always been a popular model for Chevrolet. The standard “X” frame on the Cadillac and other Chevy's was also used for the Impala.

The first big change to its styling came in 1961. The 1961 Sport Coupe were more trim than the 58 to 60 versions. With what was referred to as a “bubbleback” roofline the 61’ was unique.

So different it did not sell very well and not too many were ordered making it a very scarce collectible. Even more scarce was the Super Sport (SS) made its debut the first time in 1961.

In 1962 things got a little more interesting with Sport Coupe models came in a convertible. Engine choices also got exciting with the introduction of the famous 409 cubic-inch (6.7 L). This model made famous by the Beach Boys hit single “409”.

For the Impala model collector the selections are awesome. Model makers have been around making them since 1958 with all of the best manufactures producing the famous race cars and police car versions.

The most known police interceptor’s were the 2000 to 2005 a special police package.

Chevrolet manufactured it’s pony car the Camaro for the model year 1967. The first Camaro’s went on sale as early as September 29th 1966 wanting to provide some competition for the Ford Mustang as fast as possible.

General Motors used the same concept platform to produce the Pontiac Firebird introduced in 1967 also. The Camaro has been produced in four distinct different generations with the fifth generation set to roll out in the spring of 2009.

In February 1970 the we got the second generation Camaro and it would stick around for 11 years in all. The car got larger and wider with the new styling, making the result a much heavier car. The car saw major changes in both styling and performance all the way through the end of second-generation production in 1981.

You can find many different versions of Camaro's made by the model manufactures making all the different year models easier to find and collect.

We saw the first one in 1959 and 1960 and then production continued in 1964 and ran straight through to 1987. The car gets classified as a truck when titled.

Starting in 1978 and running all the way through to 1987 the El Camino was marketed in four different models; The Conquista, El Camino, Royal Knight and the Famous Super Sport.

Under GMC the models were GMC Caballero and GMC Sprint. The version marketed in Mexico was sold as the Chevrolet Conquistador.

In 1968 the El Camino got the station wagon and 4-door sedan wheelbase giving us a longer wheelbase for the El Camino. Another fantastic upgrade was the addition of the Super Sport with the SS396 that came out with the Chevelle.

The 1970 models SS396 were actually 402 cu in (6.6 L) all the logo emblems all read 396. You could even find a few with Chevrolet’s most powerful option of the time the LS6 454 engine.

El Caminos kind of matched the trim packages that the Chevelle Malibu had same cloth and vinyl of the day. The Strato bucket seats with center console were an option for the El Camino.

A lot of different model manufactures produced all the versions over the years making the El Camino a great collectable model.

The Monte Carlo was created by Scott Butler as Chevrolet's counterpart to the 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix. It proved to be a great success for Pontiac in 1969 and Chevrolet wanted to capitalize on the success.

1970 saw the first Monte Carlo the brainchild of Elliot M Estes (Pete) the General Manager of Chevrolet at the time. Working with Chevrolet’s stylist Dave Holls borrowing from the Cadillac Eldorado and Chevrolet Chevelle, they produced the muscular looking Monte Carlo.

The 1971 model year very little styling changes inside, the SS model got new "European symbol knobs", and the four-spoke steering wheel became optional. Mechanically, it was unchanged, although the small-block Turbo-Fire 400 two-barrel engine was dropped.

The Cadillac egg-crate grille similar to the 1971 Chevrolet Caprice and a metal rear trim molding were the changes to the 1972 Monte Carlo, the final year for the first generation design.

To make use of GM’s new A-platform known as the G-body coming in at 118” on the Grand Prix instead of adding more passenger space for the Chevrolet model. A splice between the firewall and the front wheels was added to make the unique design of the Monte Carlo. This gave it the exceptionally long hood and the look proved to be very popular for Chevrolet.

Monte Carlo’s base power option included the 350 Turbo-Fire small block V8 rated at 250 hp with a 2 barrel carburetor. In this configuration it produced 345 foot pounds of torque at 2800 rpm. Options that were standard front disk brakes and higher grade nylon upholstery and a deep twist carpet. Everyone loved the fake wood trip that was a reproduction of the elm trim used on the Rolls Royce.

With all the options available at the time a fully equipped Monte Carlo could demand more than $5,000. The options consisted of the Powerglide automatic transmission (two-speed), turbo-hydramatic (three speed) or the four seed manual transmissions. Power seats 4 season air conditioning, Strato bucket seats, Rallye wheels and console.

There were a number of engine options available to power the Monte Carlo. The 350 upgrade included a four-barrel carburetor boosting it to 300 hp. There were two different 400 cubic inch engine options offered. A version of the Chevy small block with two barrel carburetor the referred to as the (turbo-fire) at 265 hp. The second referred to as the (turbo-jet) 400 was actually 402 cubic inch rated at 330 hp was a version of the big block 396 with a larger displacement.

The Monte Carlo SS 454 was the most powerful engine option and was only an extra $420 came in at 360 hp with 500 foot pounds of torque. The (turbo-jet 454) coming in at 7.4 L with a 4 barrel carburetor was quite a fast car. Other options included in the package was the “SS 454” badge, heavy duty suspension, wider tires and turbo hydramatic transmission with 3.31 rear gear plus automatic load leveling suspension in the rear.

The first generation design running only 3 years makes this a great model to collect.

The Chevrolet Caprice started back in mid-1965. It was introduced as a luxury trim package for the Impala four-door hardtop sedan.

This was Chevrolet’s response to the Ford LTD series luxury cars and not wanting to be over sold.

The Caprice came out with a stiffer suspension, higher-grade cloth and vinyl seats plus door trim (it also included thicker, higher-grade carpeting), walnut trim on the dashboard and door panels, pull straps on the doors, extra convenience lights, special full wheel covers and an optional vinyl top.

The Chevrolet Caprice got its name by Bob Lund (Chevrolet's General Sales Manager) after a classy restaurant he frequented in New York City.

Not agreed on, some say the Caprice was named after Caprice Chapman, daughter of auto executive and influential Indy-car official James P. Chapman.

The Caprice was introduced mid 1965 and was very well received during its first year in 1965. For 1966, the Caprice was expanded into a full top-line series.

This included a two-door hardtop, and a station wagon with simulated wood exterior trim - the first Chevy "woody" wagon since 1954.

All of the Chevrolet Caprice got a V8 engine was installed.

The Fleetline Deluxe models were considered six passenger cars. They were produced in 2 door and 4 door models. In their day they were considered to be mid-priced Chevrolet. Also a Styleline Deluxe version was available. In 1950 saw the Bel-Air and Bel-Air Convertible considered higher priced cars.

The scale model manufactures have provided many versions to collect over the years. You can still find both the Styleline Deluxe and the Fleetline Deluxe models with and without the trim and “Deluxe” script on the front fender. Also you can find versions of the models with and without the gravel guards on the rear fenders.

Deluxe models were equipped with fender skirts that also improved their looks. White wall tires were available at an addition cost. My Dad called them Gangster walls.

In the 50s the sales pitch was “The ride that is new” and “smooth is everyone’s word for the companionable Chevrolet also comfortable also convenient!”

One of the later ads stated. “New Chevrolets feature smarter styling, improved performance and a really sensational new driving development”

The Vintage 57 Chevrolet was classic the day it rolled off the assembly line and it is still adored by millions. It’s made in America by most all of the model car kit manufacturers and is still one of the most sought after model cars today.

Model Makers produced the 1957 Chevy in the Three Trim Packages.

The base 150 and the next step up, a mid-range model, the 210 trim package. The best most upscale of the three was the Bel-Air package. In the 2-door sedans a special package called Del-Ray was produced. For a short time the more sought after limited edition two-door wagon called the Nomad came out as a Bel-Air is the most classic of all the models. There was a one other forth edition; very limited model called the El Morocco it was hand-built custom to represent the Cadillac era.
